To host or not to host

To host or not to host
I really enjoy playing host but lately the joy of it has been slowly and surely diminishing. It's the tupperware mentality of many that is so discouraging. This is when guests leave no dish unturned, ensuring that they and their families (including those who don't attend) are fed for the rest of the week while the host ends up cooking, possibly that same night, because of having not had a bite yet. And, yes... some even bring tupperware.
Now I grew up around small get togethers and large ones alike, where there was excess and the hosts asked guests to please take some home. This is wonderful! But I think guests have forgotten how to be good guests. Expectations and comparisons often get voiced publicly and even to the hosts. While there are offers to help, somehow stirring a pot equals take the pot with you...
Petit fours, exotic teas and dessert size plates vs. personal plattersI would Love to host something more along the lines of tea parties, partially in protest but also because the atmosphere is one I hope would help shift the focus back to socializing and away from scarfing and impromptu storage. The guest list may be selective at first but, that may be a good thing...
