I have to say that for me the problem is not the style of the underwear it's whether or not it's on show, and the image that projects. As long as advertisers sell things by selling womens bodies then girls are going to have problems with this. What should be an innocent choice 'what underwear is most comfortable' becomes fraught with connotations that often the girls themselves are not really aware of.
Our oldest daughter is starting to pay more attention to what she wears and I'm trying to educate her eye so that she can tell what clothes look good on her, it is always a case of pick and chose because what looks good on one bodyshape can look bad on another (like the dress that looks good on the hanger but takes inches of your height and adds it to your waist. Great if you're tall and skinny bad if you're not). And sometimes what looks good on the telly makes the real kids look too, umm is slutty a word?

I agree Suzi..
When I took my son to his year 6 farewell dance (all the children being 11 or 12) I was stunned at what some of the girls were wearing (not to mention that the dance was in the auditorium upstairs at the club!). I wouldn't let those girls out of the house, let alone take them to the venue! I'm refering too very short skirts, skin tight clothing, heavy make up, highheels / boots all put together! It really made me wonder what the parent or guardian's occupation was! I liked my pretty things but Mum never made a fuss over it so it didn't become a power struggle, where that was ALL I wanted; she was very liberal in that way. No one seriously saw my underwear until I was 17.. for me it was just liberating, a freedom of choice that was harmless. Rather than only saying what makes us cringe, just think about when we were teens. It was all interesting and most of us had our crushes and thoughts about physical encounters, though for most of us it wasn't acted upon until much later, thankfully.

What my daughters are wearing as underwear does ot bother me. It's more how and why they are wearing it. They have to learn some time and somewhere, I'd prefer that they learn where I can keep an eye out for them. (mind you now I re-read that it sounds dstinctly dubious).
Any clothing can be suggestive/sexy, it depends on how it's worn and the circumstances. We imput factors to clothing that are not there as of right. |
