So.. I could lose my job..
As some of you, all of you or none of you know I'm been off sick for hte past few months with back troubles again.. I'm looking to get back tow ork as there is little that can be done for my problem except gentle rehab(which i'm doing)
anyways
found out today it looks like my department is going to close down..
I have serveral options open to me and I'd like to know what one you would choose if you were in my situation..
1. Go back to work part time and work up to fulltime but work in another department, one Im not too thrilled about
2. Take retirement (i'm 36) as my problem wont get better with time it will get worse
3. find another job
4 fight to keep my department open
5 stay in the department til it closes while looking for another job..
I should actually say I have degenerative disc disease... which sounds a lot worse than it actually is as its not a disease at all.

I am sorry to hear about your back. I have a couple of friends with back trouble and I know it is pretty painful for them.
Stinks about your job. It is a tough decision also.
I think it would just cause more stress to try and fight to keep it open.
I think what I would do is get a part time job and see how that goes financially.
Good luck AR!

Miss AutumnRain .........
First off you want to go back to work ~ so to answer your questions:
1. Yes ~ go back part time and take the time to work up to full time, after such a lay off, this would help you get restarted.
2. No ~ retirement at your age [and I'm old enough to be your father] is not what you are looking for.
3. Possibly
4. Not an option ~ if they are going to close it then the company accountants have decided.
5. Yes ~ the best option ~ when the dept. closes you should get some recompence, or an alternative offer of another position, and it gives you the scope to look for another job.
Lastly ~ I'm very sorry my dear to hear of your back problem, but whilst you can still be productive in a work invironment, then go for it ~ because you never know what could be around the corner once you get back into the work place.
Hope this is some help ~ RL

What does your doctor recommend you do? I guess it really depends on how much your back can handle. You must decide what is best for you and your family. Can you afford to quit working? Do you want to work? Some people can't be at home all day, every day. It drives them crazy. I would sit down with my husband and kids if I were you and discuss the options, this way things will turn out for the best.

Strange that you bring this topic up for discussion, as an employer I'm faced with a similar situation at present and my decision is going to be influenced by the insurance company that I pay a premium to.

its a pretty hard thing to deal with cos I work for something to do not for money..So quiting wouldnt be a bad thing financially as the way the system works here I would get my union money.
My doc recommends that i start off working for a few hours a day and then add to that time if i can. if not then not to. I have a meeting withthe local authorities next week about being put on *paragraph 28* whic´h basically means that if I cant work a full week then i wont lose any money and that my workplace will be paid for hte hours i am not there.. kinda like a flexijob but with more security.
Last thing I want is to be pensioned off! im 36, which is still young and sitting at home would drive me mental.
husband knows all about this cos we have discussed it and well he works for hte same firm.. just a lot higher up the chain than me.
Its not the accounts depart thats getting rid of the department.. we had Ghengis Khan (our knickname) for a boss and he has final say.. only no one not even the other bosses are happy with his decisions.. of course you have to spend money to make money but he just fires, takes on his buddies and comes out with stupid ideas..
I have just spoken tot he owner of the company and he says even if my department goes i will still be fully employed wether im on flexi time or not.. just not sure where to put me *shrugs*
confusing times
lots of work here, and unemployment at its lowest ever, good strong economy... but it wont last forever and id rather be employed and looking for work rather than unemployed and going stir crazy...
I'll probably opt for continue working and look for something else

ah so you know theres something not right..
when i talk to the big boss he avoids eye contact, where as my immediate boss looks me in the eye and tells me things are messed up
I am the same whether i am at work home or play.. if I have something to say i'll say it

Degenerative disc is caused from poor alignment of the spine usually due to some accident or otherwise mishap.
Yea, the cartilage starts to wear away... and it's super painful.
Have you seen a chiropractor? It might slow down the progressiveness by realigning it.
Well, if you take retirement, you will stuck on a set amount of income. And with inflation, you wont be able to improve but perhaps go further into debt as you are unable to continue a growth in income to meet the needs of inflation.
I would both fight for the department and or accept a part time position WHILE looking for another job.
That way your options remain open to you while you decide on an income based on what is offered. And if nothing else is available you still have job security.
