I kinda figured you would renig on your bet..OK, enough said on such a little subject.. I don't care about arguing on such minor subjects...

I assume you are not Catholic.
Catholics do not hold to the Pope's opinions on worldly matters...
They only hold to his instructions on faith and morality.
IE- doctrines.

And the guy who said it was round was Catholic.
He was just ahead of his time. The Pope - who wasn't a scientist, altho he is entitled to his opinion, but it has nothing to do with morality.

I'm guessing your history books are different to ours
That doesnt surprise me that the UK would teach something like that.
St Thomas More was friends with the King, the King liked Thomas, and lamented the fact that Thomas [who was very dear] refused to accept him as the leader of the Church.

The King was dismissing and USURPING the Pope as the leader and wanted to fill his position...which Thomas denied.
Thomas was sent into exile [jail] after losing everything.

And since he wouldnt recant his loyalty to the Pope, he was beheaded.

The King's life was never threatened. Perhaps you need a new history book.
Thomas wanted to be a monk, but instead wasnt accepted, and so he married a good woman who died and and left him widowed. He remarried another good woman, but she wasnt like his first wife. Altho he cherished her anyway.

Even the secular government loved Thomas [which is why they put him as chancellor]... and why they kept giving him chances to recant his loyalty.

You have no proof he tried to plot against the King. But that would be, of course, a good excuse to have a well loved person beheaded so as not to cause a riot.

You believe in conspiracy theories now, but you dont think they were possible then?

Seriously, there are written accounts from his friends after his death. He was a humble, docile man who didnt like to do anyone harm.

Plots against the King... is amusing. But hey, you didnt expect a King to let it out that they were friends and he had nothing on Thomas but stubborness. It was an unnecessary and tragic death, albeit he is martyred for the Church and loyalty.

Enemies??

*We* have enemies???!?

I would guess you would have to define what you actually mean by "enemies", because otherwise, it's too vague (IMO).

If this is about war, then I believe there are International Laws that deal with this...about rules of engagement, treatment of POW's...that sort of thing.

Patrish, if you're looking for a way to excuse the Bush administration for their war crimes, I would hope that none are offered here....and if this is on a more personal level, and you mean your own *personal* enemies...then I might suggest a change in perspective...and instead of seeing them as "enemies" because they believe in a different religion than you, then maybe you could see them as friends....albeit, *really stubborn* friends.
