LOS ANGELES - City officials are putting South Los Angeles on a diet.
The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to place a moratorium on new fast food restaurants in an impoverished swath of the city with a proliferation of such eateries and above average rates of obesity. The yearlong moratorium is intended to give the city time to attract restaurants that serve healthier food. The action, which the mayor must still sign into law, is believed to be the first of its kind by a major city to protect public health. "Our communities have an extreme shortage of quality foods," City Councilman Bernard Parks said. Representatives of fast-food chains said they support the goal of better diets but believe they are being unfairly targeted. They say they already offer healthier food items on their menus. _____________________________________ Isn't this another case of Big Brother going too far? Shouldn't restaurants build where they want to build, and shouldn't people have the choice of what they want to eat?

Good debate sybarite. No I don't think that the government should stop fast-food outlets from establishing anywheres they want to. Although in the part where they plan to build this particuclar resturant has more gangs then anything else. The major wants to help protect the older people and younger people from all the drug traficing that is already there. I believe the city counsel belives this would just give them another place to hang out at.
HEY! Squirt I love that picture, going to try that at the McDonald's up the street from me sometime soon. And will make sure to bring along my son to get photos. LOL!

We mandate most food stuffs brought into our borders or at least the FDA suggest so....yet to mandate healthy foods within our own boarders is big brother...we have a general of healty guy for a reason or is it yet another republican ploy to make us think we eat well? |

Is prostitution legal in some States of the USA ? Brothels and prostitution are that grey area of society but some States here have taken the step to legalise prostitution. Under the thinking of the first few posts, free enterprise means that Brothels and Fast Food outlets can be zoned to be built next to schools, churches and hospitals. |

For an average man you certainly see the duplicity of US American legislation....Good for you...Might I ask that you keep your steadfast disposition and continue to teach those that seem unteachable? Don't get me going on the "uncivil war"! |
