An old thread that ran in here made me think about coming back in and making this thread.
Anyone remember the feral cat debate? Anyway - so I was talking to these ladies who lost their cat. And not only them, but alot of folks who took cats in and are not seeing the critters anymore. Apparently, not just cats, but little dogs too. People are looking for their pets, but come to find them vanished. So much so that no one in the area has a small pet anymore. Where did they go? Apparently with the lack of hunting...coyotes are taking over. And not only taking over, but are becoming bolder. Going into ppl yards and grabbing their pets. The fear is that children may be next on the menu. However; the theory is - that a few years ago someone [some entity or institution] set these animals free in Pa. Some believe it was the commissioners office and some think the insurance companies to keep the deer population down. Now - we have too many coyotes, and very few deer. Problem is, not as many ppl are hunting these days after years of anti hunting whiners forcing ppl to stop buying furs and trade in animal products. Man is part of the balance in nature. Just like the predators exist, man is also a predator. If man stops hunting, trapping...the situation will only get worse. SKunks, raccoons et al are breeding so much where i live that we have the highest amount in rabie related illnesses. I just wanted to vent out my frustrations and worries. Ya know - i saw a coyote running up the field in June .. and i wish i had a rifle handy [already in hand] to shot em. Because the over population is not only going to starve themselves anyway - but its going to take down a whole lot of animals. ANyway - just wanted to add that someone found their den... area. How? By all the pet collars found surrounding it. I would think serious maintenance needs to be employeed. Perhaps take the pups and raise them like dogs...for those who are truly animal lovers. And thin out the adult animals.

haha...actually, I do remember that...and was thinking about that the other day...
and I think that we need balance in all parts of our lives... having said that, I think nature would probably do a better job of regulating itself, than when man keeps trying to interfere...that has been shown time and time again over the years. maybe it's best to let the animals fend for themselves, and only step in when you absolutely have to...and try to keep man's interference to an absolute minimum. I mean, I realize you believe we were given dominion over the Earth and all its worthless inhabitants, but I believe the Earth can and will regulate itself....and heal itself...if we can manage to not destroy it between now and the next ice age.

[YEP] Balance needs to work...needs to be implemented.
When ya throw a cog in the wheel, things tend to go awry. At least that is the finding in 99.9% of those who tried it.

Needs to be "implemented"....????
haha...me'thinks you want to interfere *yet again*....have you learned nothing from history...??!? Yes, man is a part of nature...one small part...but still a part. Nature should be thought of as the master of man, not the other way around. The problem with your way of thinking (in my mind) is that you go from one extreme to the next....let's kill off all the coyotes...then it's like, "aww, sh*t...now we killed all the coyotes, and now we're being overrun with vermin!"....so then you try to further upset the balance AGAIN by killing off all the vermin, which then causes another effect that you hadn't forseen...and so on and so forth...

if I see an animal in need of help im gonna help it regardless if the wild is hurting or not..
All my cats have been injured or starving strays, my husband calls me the Cat Lady from the Simpsons We have noticed a rise in numbers of wild creatures here, and i think its fantasic. Even to the point of having racoon dogs, which are NOT from this corner of the world... Whatever next.. governments shooting us to keep numbers down? after all we are just an animal
