Millions of Starving Shame the World, U.N. Says
you know what gets me? the vast over eaters of the world.. think how much money could be saved if obese overeaters were put on rations! think the billions that would saved in health care alone.. think of how 1 weeks saved money could be spent to help the starving in africa and asia.. This is hte reason behind this post. While visiting my husband yesterday my daughter and I went down to hte cafe while my husband was getting more tests taken. I'm sipping my iced water, my daughter a glass of milk.. across the eating area there is Information Center. There was a poster of a little starving child with the usual SAVE CHILDREN stuff on it and contact details.. and sitting underneath it was the biggest lady i have ever seen! She couldnt get on a normal chair so someone had given her a couch to sit on! She had 2 large milkshakes infront of her 2 portions of chips (fries) 3 slices of pizza and 4 hotdogs! I watched her.. I love people watching.. not impolite rude staring but watching.. I thought her children or her family would come for her.. nope.. she sat through the entire lot on her own. then after about 20 mins she tries to get up but putting one hand on the couch and the other on the poster of the little starving child! SHE failed miserably and as we were leaving to go see my husband again, 2 men were trying to get her into a car and I thought... If she was given strick rations to buy food, think of the money she could save, think of that little child, think how much we ourselves can do instead of waiting for other people to do it all... My rant for today I'm going through a "people suck" thing at the moment.. but this one really took haaaa the biscuit.

It's not lack of food that causes starvation so much as human action. Most severe famines are caused in war-zones and yet we have politicians saying that "famine" charities should steer clear of political debates. They need to involve themselves more there since even the best famine releif is no good if all your foodaid is seized by men with guns.

FLynn after we all grew up my mother sponsored a wee boy from Ethiopia, we couldnt pronounce his name so we called him Ben for short.. He was only 8 years old no parents and was HIV positive... sadly Ben died a few years later..It was as heartbreaking as if he had been living with us..
Vinnie I have never agreed with "give the starving food" im more of a "give them the chance to grow their own and teach their stupid goverments about good economics"

Ummm....Flynn...if I may interject here...what you're suggesting here is *action*... That goes against our strict policy of just talking about, and/or complaining about things...there's usually no actual *doing* involved...I'm not sure if you were aware of that or not. Anyways, all kidding aside, I think that is a great idea...so how do we proceed...? And should we ask Jokaroo to get involved, where they set up a link to a site like Pay-Pal or something, where the funds could be *securely* drawn from a credit card or something...?

Sadie is right, it is a good idea. It would be nice to think that the administrators would endorse the use of this board for charitable purposes. I'm not so sure being phillanthropic fits into the image they are trying to create with a new look board. questions............. So, if it is achievable who gets to hold the keys to safe box containing the money ? It can't be set up in an individuals name because of the tax implications. What charity, child or family do we sponsor ? Does everyone get an equal vote on how the money is spent no matter how large or small their donation is ? There's plenty of questions to ask but asking questions doesn't get money in the bank. I'm sure there are plenty of members who have more time than myself to look into setting up a charitable organisation and if someone would like to take on the job I say they should go for it. As much as I'm this cranky person who hates all the members of this board it would make me that little bit happier if the money was spent in house on a childs education. That's my suggestion and I'm sure there are a lot of other people, places and reasons for the money to go elsewhere. and Yes Spanky, you're right too, action always speaks louder than words. If the idea goes cold I'll continue to drop my spare change into the Salvation Army collection boxes. |

My appologies to AR, I couldn't find a Danish charity site in the English language. Charity Guide - Our Packages Things to think about before setting up a new charity Philanthropy Australia » Research & Information » Frequently Asked Questions How do you set up a charity? - Yahoo! Answers It's a start, if someone has the time would you please check it out. $5000.00 seems to be a minimum world wide standard to set up a charity. |
