I had my surgery on Tuesday morning (9/23), and I just wanted to share about the experience. My right breast was diagnosed with cancer and the best option was to remove it. I've discussed other options with my doctors.
My husband drove me to Maryland to John Hopkins Hospital, it took 10 hrs from Georgia and it was exhausting. John Hopkins is sooo big, it feels like the Panda Express, that's how efficient and fast and the amount of volume they have. THere were 17 surgeries on the same morning as mine on the same floor. The nurse told me there were 17 surgery rooms on this floor. It amazed me how organized they were. We were all led as a group (it felt like I was at girl scout camp or something) to the prep area, we each were placed at our prep stations, saw and got interviewed by at least 5 or 6 different nurses and our doctors, all with smiles and very positive attitude. In fact they were all so nice, it made you think you were going for a facial not surgery. The anesthesiology lady was so nice, she explained every detail then she wheeled me into the surgery room and asked me would I like to walk into there or would I like wheel chair. I said I could walk and it was a very strange 5 steps to the operating table. I felt like I was out of space and my journey was about to begin. I laid down and the nurse slowly placed the breathing thing over my mouth and that's the last thing I remember until I was back in the room. Of course I was on iv and the nurse told me to just push a button every ten minutes to get more pain med. Well, ten minutes was not good enough, I told her I can't wait ten minutes, it hurt too much, so she upped it to every six minutes, then I told her it still wasn't giving every six minutes cause I could see the clock and it was still on 10 min, so she fixed it. Then I asked her for something to be able to sleep too, cause the pain meds were not enough to knock me out, just the pain, so she gave me something for that and I could be passed out for a long time at a stretch. In the morning the first group of doctors came to check on me. Teaching hospital, so I guess I'm "OBSERVED" but they were all good looking so I didn't mind. Then the second group came, all very nice and supportive. My doctors came too, the surgeon and the plastic surgeon. The plastic surgeon looks like she's about 25, very young, but she sure knew what she was talking about and was extremely pleasant and informative and I felt comfortable with her. My husband was there and helped and I think was more nervous than I. Anyway, I'm able to move around more and more each day and that's good, hopefully I'll be back to work in a week or two. Just wanted to share that, it certainly was an experience I will never forget. Thanks for listening. Some of you may have been wondering why I"m overdosing in the fantasy pic thread. I guess just trying to cope and my way of escaping the raw reality.

Ms. Kiki, I see you have been through a lot and am glad you are faring well. Seems a few of the members I have gotten to know are dealing with health issues. I guess we all are getting older!
I am a strong believer in attitude...I researched you a bit, yes I do that, and you have plenty of spunk, so go knock this cancer out and te hell with em all...Enjoy! Highest Regards, James |
