Default Girl In Nude MySpace Pics Child Porn Arrest

A 14-year-old girl has been accused of child pornography for posting nearly 30 explicit nude pictures of herself on MySpace.

Teens are being charged for sending racy text messages or posting illicit photos

The charges could force the teenager from New Jersey, US, to register as a sex offender, if convicted.

Her arrest came as prosecutors across America pursue child pornography cases over kids sending naked photographs to one another by mobile phone and emails.

Social networking website MySpace would not comment on the New Jersey investigation, but the company has a team that reviews its network for inappropriate images.

Police arrested the girl after a tip-off from America's National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children.

Passaic County sheriff's spokesman Bill Maer said: "We consider this case a wake-up call to parents."

The girl posted the photos because "she wanted her boyfriend to see them," he said.

The teen was charged with possession of child pornography and distribution of child pornography.

She was released to her mother's custody.

If convicted of the distribution charge, she would be forced to register with the state as a sex offender under Megan's Law, said state Attorney-General Anne Milgram.

She also could face up to 17 years in jail, though such a stiff sentence is unlikely.

Some - including the New Jersey mother behind the creation of Megan's Law - criticised the trend of prosecuting teens who send racy text messages or post illicit photos of themselves.

Maureen Kanka's daughter Megan became the law's namesake after the seven-year-old was raped and killed in 1994 by a twice-convicted sex offender.

She said: "(The 14-year-old) should have an intervention and counselling, because the only person she exploited was herself."

Sorry about caps headline.. I just c&p

now.. where do we draw the line? I mean Im not for girls sending out pics of ANYTHING online least of all their naked body...But how can ew charge her for child porn distribution when she is just a child herself.. isnt it better to intoduce her to women who have been through all this before and have had felt the backlash of their consequences?
I mean punishing her isnt going to stop her curiousity is it?

again it seems punishment comes before education

For this you need responsible prosecutors noty those who wish to make a name for themselves and get re-elected. I dislike the idea of direct elected law enforcement officials since they will choose to pursue cases like this regardless of whether it is in the pubklic interest.

I have a friend that lives in L.A. that said when she was at the public library, a man was looking at porn on the computer. Anyone who walked by could have seen it, including children. She complained to the librarian and the librarian said there have been complaints about it before, but there is nothing they can do about it. Putting filters on the computers limits too many websites. If that's the case, I'm keeping my 8 year old grand-daughter out of the library.

Joe I tend to agree with you..

syb.. more and more people should have complained... here there are filters on library pc's, and you cannot access anything that looks like porn or even if it has one of those stupid slutty dating ads.. nothing..
also if you access forums on them then you cant post anything if you swear!

Im all for the filters in public libraries... better to protect then not protect at all

when I've gone to the library to access the Roo, couldn't even open the Battle of the Sexes forum cuz it had "sex" in the title lol

I think they've gone way too far with this girl, I was tryin' to remember what I was like at 14 and she seems tame by comparison lol I would think that the humiliation of having her pics discovered would be sufficient

(thinking out loud) What responsibility should the parents of this 14 year old take in all of this? I mean, my daughter is 15 and I know everything she does on that computer. If I'm not home she's not on the computer and when I am all eyes are on her because I purposely had it set up in the kitchen. I have passwords on everything so she has no access to it without my help. As far as her phone is concerned, I try to keep my eye on her but I guess we can't be there 24/7 can we?
I think labeling her as a sex offender is a little harsh, it's not like she did this to anybody else other then herself, she's 14 for pete's sakes, she's just a child. Perhaps a big scare, a firm warning and some heavy duty counselling would be in order, unless she's caught doing it again....

Why would American authorities release that child back into the care of her mother who has so obviously failed the test of being a responsible parent ?

Gloss over it all you want.

She is 14 and she submitted child porn for others to view.

Her guardians gave her access to a computer, a digital camera and forgot to tell her about being morally decent.

Sounds more like the actions of an adult American. Their morally bankrupt society is being adopted by 14 year olds.

this is the parents not parenting the child ..... I think it would be hard to get the teenager charged with child pornography ... but I really think that her parents should be held accountable .....

and this is exactly one reason why my oldest cannot have a MySpace account or FaceBook ....

It's an American story the RED highlights it even more.

    but

No matter what country the story was from the point remains.......

    It's bad parenting.

Parents are giving their children the materials to self destruct and then they look to others to blame when pictures of that social and moral self destruction turns up on the NET.

Aswell as the parents...I think myspace should then be charged aswell for allowing underaged to join
there website and post such pictures..
Im not sure what the age limit
and the rules on posting naked pics are on myspace.
It gives even sites who share loads of sexy comments tags especially for myspace...
comments sites ..should be held responsible too..and put a warning...like..enter only when 18..
or like..dont post any if you are underage on mysppace etc...as you mite could get sent to prison!!!
Schools should have a cpl.lessons on the danger of social networking sites aswell..
My mates son just recently had those lessons on how to not trust anybody on the net..
    give out personal details...meet up...etc.
We had a cpl tv ads about it too...they also could include this story now too...
I know responsible parents like you and me already teached it to there kids..
    but for those
    who havent thought of it..
same as sex education in school..
it even could be included into subjects like that...
it would be a good tool to get the warnings across to the kids

I agree that's what she did but she didn't do it to hurt anybody, like you said, she was given the tools and the trust that a teenager should not be given...I love my daughter and I trust her...she's a good girl but that doesnt' mean that she's ammune from doing anything wrong. Teenagers tend to test the waters, we've all been there, it's just that the waters in the world of today's teen are a little bit deeper. I stayed out late, even if it meant being grounded later, I thought it was worth it to have a good time with my friends...today's teen can come home early, kiss their parents good night and go to their room where there just happens to be an open window to the outside world and all of it's thrills and spills, just sitting there waiting for them to log on. That's why I think it's wrong to have a computer in their bedrooms, no matter how much you trust your teenager, the computer holds temptations that can get them into trouble.....parents have to start thinking about what they're doing to their children and should be held responsible when something like this happens.

exactly ... I think all of us through our teen years tested the waters ..... but todays society is a lot different than when we were younger ..... I know my oldest is testing my limits with her now and boy o boy ....she wants to know why I will not let her have a MySpace account ... well this is one reason..... no one is allowed online in this house unless I log them in ... they do not have a password to even get into the computer in my house ... now at their fathers that is a different story ....

I also heard that on Craigslist there are nude pictures too .... not sure where or what area ..... because I don't belong to it .... but some friends were telling me about it .... I think that is crazy to have nude pictures on that place .....

Exactly Anna. Passwords work very well, take it from a parent who uses them.

My daughter is 15 years old and she desperately wants a computer in her bedroom..and I`ve told her again and again that it`s out of the question. I have my laptop, which is used by me alone...it`s password protected of course, and I have one in the kitchen as well which is also password protected. She hates that she has to wait until I get home from work to use the computer but just smile at her and say `that`s life`.

I trust her, I just don`t trust the hormone raging alien lifeform that lives inside of her..lol. It`s not easy to stick to your guns when it comes to teens, but when you do it`s so much easier to deal with them. Molly knows that no means no and that`s it. Most consider me a softy when it comes to my kids, and I`m not denying that, but I have tried to be consistant with them, it`s not easy but it works better in the long run.

I know everything that she does when she`s on the computer, every site she visits, and every friend she interacts with..my kitchen is the busiest room in the house so she gets no privacy at all while online...and that`s the way it has to stay....for her sake.
