Um T..the assumption that because cats are predators is in err...that they have no enemies.
Wolves, coyotes, hawks...they are not selective of whether another animal is a predator or not. YOU gave the ratio of procreation...however; you did not include their life span..being aprox 2 years. SO on an average a kitten can repopulate at 2 years, they are most likely going to have about one or 3 batches of kittens. AND the number of surviving kitties is 1 per litter. So, for every feral cat there are multitude of 'things' against them. Starvation, predators {Esp for the kittens} and weather...depending on the area. Extreme cold can kill a kitty. YOU dont often see the same feral kitty after a short time. So, even IF they multiply at the factor of the given ratio, you forgot to mention their odds of survival. So, all in all...unless they are in an 'urban' whereas they may be caught and domesticated and spayed and nuetered...you ignore the risk factors they face by not including their average life span. The best thing to do, is take them somewhere they can be fed, and or euthanised, if no one claims them...but 'no kill' places will 'fix em up' and allow someone to care for them. The older wilder ones may be euthanized....if it is THEN DETERMINED by social testing that they cannot become 'domesticated'. Another thing that can be done..is advertizing free kitties in the more rural areas, where the populace doesnt last. Due to natural efforts. While living they can be of use. |
