We were taking part in a night navigation rally, and I was map-reading (which explains why my almost-ex was at the wheel, and we were travelling comparatively slowly). We were approaching a junction where we had to turn right, so I had my head down studying the collection of maps and route directions on my lap, and suddenly .... there was a massively loud bang, and glass splinters were flying around everywhere. As I looked up, all I could see through the shattered windscreen was a total blackness - no car headlamps, street lights, stars, or anything else.

The car had hit the errant horse head-on, which threw the animal up onto the bonnet, after which it slid further until it finally came to rest with its head and neck on the roof, and the rest of its body across the front windscreen and bonnet - blocking out the night lights. After a second or two, the horse twisted and fell to the ground, from where it staggered to its feet and trotted off into the darkness !!!

The Police attended the accident, and took samples of the horse hair that was caught in some of the twisted bodywork and at the base of the windscreen - for later analysis !!! I really thought that this was a joke .... some over-eager copper had been watching too much Miami Vice .... but a large brown horse was found two days later wandering around in the nearby fields, so was duly returned to his owner and identified from the matching hairs as the poor animal that we had hit - after which the owner was hit with a huge bill !!!

So the final damage was .... one slightly shaken and scratched horse .... two very shaken and slightly cut (from the windscreen fragments) car occupants .... one written-off BMW .... and just over $ 20,000 to pay by the horse owner ....

.... but if we had been going just a few miles per hour faster, the bulk of the horse would have ended up inside the car, and would almost certainly have killed both my almost-ex and myself.

Wow! What an awful ordeal to have to go through! So glad you were driving... slow! Take care!
