Default Cat Hunting Legal?!!!

MADISON, Wis.(AP) Feline lovers holding pictures of cats, clutching stuffed animals and wearing whiskers faced-off against hundreds of hunters at meetings around Wisconsin to voice their opinion on whether to legalize cat hunting.

Residents in 72 counties were asked whether free-roaming cats _ including any domestic cat that isn't under the owner's direct control or any cat without a collar _ should be listed as an unprotected species. If listed as so, the cats could be hunted.

The proposal was one of several dozen included in a spring vote on hunting and fishing issues held by the Wisconsin Conservation Congress. The results, only advisory, get forwarded to the state Natural Resources Board.

Statewide results were expected Tuesday.

La Crosse firefighter Mark Smith, 48, helped spearhead the cat-hunting proposal. He wants Wisconsin to declare free-roaming wild cats an unprotected species, just like skunks or gophers. Anyone with a small-game license could shoot the cats at will.

At least two other upper Midwestern states, South Dakota and Minnesota, allow wild cats to be shot _ and have for decades. Minnesota defines a wild, or feral, cat as one with no collar that does not show friendly behavior, said Kevin Kyle with that state's Department of Natural Resources.

Every year in Wisconsin alone, an estimated 2 million wild cats kill 47 million to 139 million songbirds, according to state officials. Despite the astounding numbers, Smith's plan has been met with fierce opposition from cat lovers.

Critics of Smith's idea organized Wisconsin Cat-Action Team and developed a Web site _ dontshootthecat.com. Some argue it is better to trap wild cats, spay or neuter them, before releasing them.

In Madison, about 1,200 people attended the Monday evening meeting at the Alliant Center _ more than the 250 or so in a typical year, but less than the 3,000 or so who took part in a debate in 2000 over whether to allow hunters to shoot mourning doves.

One of the attendees was Katy Francis, who wore cat ears, whiskers, a cat nose and a sign that read, "Too Cute to Kill." For Francis, "The cat hunting thing brought me out because it was very extreme."

Unfortunately, we aren't dealing with "Pretty Kitty". Responsible pet owners insure their pets don't reproduce in unlimited numbers. (Spay or neuter)

Feral animals contract rabies and other diseased that are passed on to domesticated animals and people. And just because they are cute is not a valid defense to prevent population control.

We think rabbits are cute and cuddly too, but ask an Australian what happens when they are allowed to breed uncontrollably.

Mickey Mouse is cute too, but ask a resident of a ghetto how much they love rats.

Seems like they would be protected if they had collars, homes, and were being cared for by their owners. These cats have been abandoned.

WELL IT SEEMS LIFE DOES TURN ITS CIRCLE...WE BUY A PRETTY LITTLE KITTY AND BRING IT HOME..AND GET TIRED OF IT AND LET IT RUN TO OVER POPULATE,BRING IN INFECTIONS,AND POSSIBABLY KILL OTHER PETS...YEAH,ITS ALL THERE FAULT !.....
NOW I DO AGREE IN THE WILD THEY DONT HAVE THIS OPTION,GOING TO GET NUDDERED,GOOD FOOD,MEDS,VACCINES..ETC...BUT WE ARE STILL QUILTY OF MOVING THEM OUT OF THER INVOROMENT..ARE WE NOT!..IF THE WILD WAS LEFT ALONE NATURE HAS A WAY OF RECYCLING..THEY FEED ..SO REDUCTION IN POPULATION.....BUT WHEN YOU TAKE THERE HOME AWAY,THEN YOU BRING THEM INTO POPULATION WHERE THEY HAVE NO CHOSES BUT TO FIND FOOD AND SHELTER WHERE THEY CAN,AND TO POPULATE...SO..AS WE ALWAYS DO..LIKE I SAID BEFORE WE KILL THEM OFF WHEN THEY BECOME A PROBLEM..NOT ADDRESSING THE PROBLEM!

YES THIS IS TRUE,BUT STILL BACK TO PEOPLE!..PPL BRING IN UNDOMESTICATED ANIMALS IN TO THE POPULATION..ARE RUN THEM TO POPULATION..STIIL WE ARE TO BLAME!

We think rabbits are cute and cuddly too, but ask an Australian what happens when they are allowed to breed uncontrollably.
NOT ONLY AUSTRALIAN HAVE THIS PROBLEM!..USA DOES AS WELL SO ITS CONTROLLED,BUT AGAIN..YOU AS A RESPONSABLE OWNER HAVE TO MAKE SURE THIS OVER POPULATION DOENT OCCURE..THEY ARE SOLD IN PET STORES ALL OVER THE WORLD,SAME AS CHICKS..THE SPCA HAS CRAKCED DOWN ON IT DUE TO THE FACT OF CRULITY TO ANIMALS...THESE USED TO BE WHAT YOU WAS GIVIN AT EASTER!..BUT AGAIN WE THE PPL ARE TO BLAME!..AND SAME RULE APPLYS TO THE WILD ONES..NATURE TAKES CARE OF IT,BY LARGER PREDATORES.....

Mickey Mouse is cute too, but ask a resident of a ghetto how much they love rats.

WELL,YA KNOW I HATE RATS!..AND DONT HAVE THEM AROUND..BUT THE RAT HAS BEEN FOR DECADES...AND TO ALL THE WORLDS APPROACHES CANT KILL THEM OFF..NOW IN EVERY PET STORE NATION WIDE THEY SELL RATS,FOR LAB USES,TO FEED LARGE SNAKES,AND JUST FOR PETS..DAUGHTER HAS 2 WITE MICE(YUK)...BUT AGAIN,WE ARE A SLOPPY NATION WE GIVE THE RATS A CHANCE TO FEED AND FEED WELL..WE WASTE MORE FOOD THEN SOME OF THE WORLD HAS NEVER SEEN!..NOW..THINK ABOUT IT..WHY ARENT THERE ALOT OF RATS IN THE WILD?..NOT AS MANY AS THOSE IN POPULATION..WHY CAUSE WE FEED THEM,THEY ARE GOOD FOOD HUNTERS....AND WE TOSS IT IN ALYS,GARBAGE CANS,DUMPS..WE SUPPLY A PLACE FOR THEM TO BREED,AND SERVIVE..AGAIN ITS BACK TO US!

Seems like they would be protected if they had collars, homes, and were being cared for by their owners. These cats have been abandoned.

WELL FROM MY EXPERINCE,I WOULD TRY TO PUT A COLLOR ON A BIG CAT IN THE WILD,NOR WOULD I TRY TO PUT A COLLAR ON A RAT!....AND A COLLAR WONT HELP THE FACT THAT ..IF YOU DONT TAKE CARE OF IT..THEN IT RUNS WILD..SO AGAIN..BACK TO US!....

These cats have been abandoned.....NOW YOUR GETTING IT......GLAD YOU SAID THAT!

my sister-in-law has twenty cats on her farm, none of which have collars because if they were to get caught on something in her barns they could die.
according to this story, if someone saw her cats, with no collars, they could shoot them!
how do you know if it is a shy pet or a feral cat? I think there are other ways of dealing withthis then hunting them down!
They are innocent animals who did not ask for this life !
man is just to gun happy, got a problem? shoot it! BS!

Feral animals have their roles.

And if we strip our country of them....we will see more diseases.
Cats seldom contract rabies...
Not impossible, but not as likely.

They keep the field mice {Which populate quickly} down to a minimum...and MICE are the ones who will enter homes and causes diseases.

Thank a WILD cat for your house not being over run by mice.

Take the critters out of the 'food chain' and like anything else removed...BIG troubles.

Instead...there should be a reduced rate or even a free rate to spay some, or nueter them.
In fact, feral cats have a life span of 2 years...so it's not like they live life long enough that they should not be replenished.

Incidently....many times ppl are to blame. Many ppl get sick of a pet...take them to a farm in the country and set them free.

I have cared for some who are outdoor cats....they eat what I give them besides maintaining the mice population.
BUT because they are so friendly, and just 'show up' it is obvious the ppl who threw them out who should be responsible.

The problems we have are not ferals...many have kittens, and few actually survive their first year. In a batch of four, one might live. And of that one who lives, they replace the older one who dies within about 2 years.

WE should also have a free rabies shot for these cats...

BUT taking down the population completely could be bad bad news.

Does anyone even realise the extensive diseases mice carry?? Compare that to cats.

I'm glad I live in a country where hunting is now illegal.
Only thing they hunted was foxes and that was a so called sport
Now thanks to Tony Blaire it's all over

They need to start fining people who don't keep their cats spayed and neutered and collared.

I gotta say.........I have bird feeders, and bird baths......I have about 18 wild parrots who come to feed and bathe in my feeders and bird baths.

I also have 4 cats, and all my neighbors have cats.

If anyone were to shoot my cat .............I'd go to jail for shootin' 'em back.
