Sibylla Brodzinsky in Bogotá
Thursday August 31, 2006 The Guardian A Vatican official has said the Catholic church will excommunicate a medical team who performed Colombia's first legal abortion on an 11-year-old girl, who was eight weeks pregnant after being raped by her stepfather. Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, the president of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for the Family, said in addition to the doctors and nurses, the measure could apply to "relatives, politicians and lawmakers" whom he called "protagonists in this abominable crime". The girl, whose identity has not been released, had "fallen in the hands of evildoers", the cardinal said in an interview with local television on Tuesday. In May Colombia's constitutional court partially lifted the ban on abortion in this deeply Catholic country, allowing pregnancies to be terminated in cases of severe deformity of the foetus, when the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest, or when the mother's life is in danger. The first test of the ruling came when the girl sought to terminate her pregnancy, which followed her being raped by her stepfather. The man admitted to the abuse, which began when the child was seven. When the case became public, doctors were wary of performing the abortion as the text of the court's ruling has yet to be published and they feared prosecution. But the high court issued a new ruling, compelling doctors to abide by its decision if the woman's case fell within the criteria. Once the ruling was handed down, the girl's pregnancy was terminated at a public hospital in Bogotá. Carlos Lemus, the director of Simon Bolivar hospital where the abortion was performed, said he respected the church's decision but did not share its view. "We acted within the constitutional framework," Dr Lemus said. "We were faced with the petition of a girl who wanted to go back to playing with her toys." He said Cardinal Trujillo "calls the doctors and nurses 'evildoers'. I think the person who raped her is the evildoer". A senator, Gina Parody, said: "The Vatican has the right to excommunicate whomever they choose. But I would hope that they also excommunicate priests when they rape boys or girls." The president of Colombia's ecclesiastic tribunal, Monsignor Libardo Ramírez, said according to canonical law excommunication was applied to anyone who participated in the "murder of a child in the womb". But he added that it would be up to Cardinal Rubiano Sáenz, as the leading figure of the Roman Catholic church in Colombia, to decide whether to formally apply the sanctions and to whom. Public health authorities have estimated that more than 300,000 clandestine abortions are carried out each year in the country. Illegal abortion is punishable by up to three years in prison for both the women who terminate their pregnancies and for the doctors who perform the procedure. http://www.guardian.co.uk/colombia/s...ticle_continue now can someone help me understand something.. Why excommunicate someone for doing what was obviously the correct thing to do yet turn a blind eye when their own priests are at it with the choir boys?

"don't do as I do, do as I tell you" is the first thing that comes to mind here, the reason that the catholic church does nothing about it's internal problems is because it's too busy telling others how they should live, I believe that the catholic church is the "great prostitute" spoken about in revelations, I'd bet they'll not excommunicate the step father either ...

Isnt it enough to have her deal with one ordeal...but forcing her to murder her child will [and say that with emphasis] WILL.......
absolutely cause her mental anguish. She is 11 years old. This is difficult enough for a grown woman to live with... it will be tragic for her mental future. Isnt it bad enough she had ONE violent act perpetrated against her?? So then add on more and ruin her totally. More violence is NOT the answer.DOES anyone here know the stats on suicide for abortion related causes???? Let alone one against your will? Yes, at 11 she relies on adults. Pity it is what the adults choose, disregarding her mental health. Wish we had a suitable emoticon for pure disgust. |

where does it say it was against her will? it said she "sought" the abortion, I'm not sure which would be worse, the constant reminder of the ugliness that is/was her childhood, the thought that a piece of that slime lives on in this world or trying to deal with the loss of a baby that should've never been conceived in the first place, what woman in her right mind, child or no, would want to carry this horrible man's baby?

![]() First of all, is the step father even Catholic?? And if so, chances are he doesnt practice, and would not care... He might not even be Catholic but in name only. WHICH is NOT Catholic BTW. Furthermore, I see you running your mouth on some subjects you have no clue about. First of all the Church is cleaning up the priesthood. Second they are reporting priests and removing them from the clergy. Secondly, you have no clue what Revelation teaches. AND unfortunately I am going to add that your sig pics are so anti pious, I would be careful who I admonished...if I were you. Remove the log from your eye b4 you point out the splinters in others. |

It took me since 1992 to read, research, and collect information NOT only on Catholciism, but many other faiths as well. AND I am Catholic because I know the HISTORY of Catholicism. Revelation is NOT what you read it to be, nor is what you seem to think it is. Babylon is NOT Roman Catholic.... AND its so easy to see too. Thats the saddest part. I believe Ch 18 tells us NO MORE TRADE can occur with in her. THE Church does not trade and make profits by selling wine, fine cloths, gold, and many other pleasurable resources. NOR does the Church drink the blood of the Saints...which are those who are unborn....those who were martyred, and those who are slaughtered because they are crippled and of no use to society. Furthermore, all countries do not go to HER PORT for trade. The CHURCH doesnt have a flippin port. And the girl is 11 years old...she was without a doubt coerced into that decision by adults. Say what you will, but a child lets adults instruct them, especially at age 11, I know I have a daughter. BTW.... I would quit reading Chick Tracts if I were you. ALSO ....being a sinner is one thing, but relishing the sin is another. Without repentence from that sin, there is no forgiveness. |
