I think what the lady is trying to say is to try to have or show a tough exterior but also have an open Heart by being understanding and compassionate towards others and understanding but yet not put yourself in the position to be taken advantage of by people.

I can certainly relate to how you feel, sometimes it's very difficult to deal with some things such as depression. I know it's never nice to be depressed and feeling lonely my Dear, that's where my friends come in at to talk to if they are around and not busy.
