A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life. -------------------- A scientific man ought to have no wishes, no affections, - a mere heart of stone. -------------------- Animals, whom we have made our slaves, we do not like to consider our equal. -------------------- False facts are highly injurious to the progress of science, for they often endure long; but false views, if supported by some evidence, do little harm, for every one takes a salutary pleasure in proving their falseness. -------------------- I am turned into a sort of machine for observing facts and grinding out conclusions. -------------------- I cannot persuade myself that a beneficent and omnipotent God would have designedly created parasitic wasps with the express intention of their feeding within the living bodies of Caterpillars. -------------------- If the misery of the poor be caused not by the laws of nature, but by our institutions, great is our sin. -------------------- Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science. -------------------- In the survival of favoured individuals and races, during the constantly-recurring struggle for existence, we see a powerful and ever-acting form of selection. -------------------- It has been a bitter moritification for me to digest the conclusion that the 'race is for the strong' and that I shall probably do little more but be content to admire the strides others made in science. |

Fond as we are of our loved ones, there comes at times during their absence an unexplained peace. -------------------- To be bound by outworn customs and traditions, and to be hampered by every known obstacle which could be put in one's path, and then to have the world calmly look on and tell you it was no use it was the divine will, was growing too absurd to be longer tolerated with dignity or accepted with self-respect. The soul within me refused to beat out its life against barred doors, and I rebelled. -------------------- Then the young lady ... proved by statistics ... the awful results which happened where women did have the ballot -- how deeply women get interested in politics, because women are hysterical, and we cannot think of anything else, we just forget our families, cease to care for our children, cease to love our husbands, and just go to the polls and vote and keep on voting for ten hours a day, 365 days a year, and never let up! If we ever get to the polls once, you will never get us home. So that the women will not vote at all, and they will not do anything but vote! Now these are two very strong anti-suffrage arguments, and they can prove them, by figures. -------------------- Now one of two things is true: Either a republic is a desirable form of government, or else it is not. If it is, then we should have it, if it is not, then we ought not to pretend that we have it. |

The Bible shows the way to go to heaven, not the way the heavens go. -------------------- All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them. -------------------- I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use. -------------------- I have never met a man so ignorant that I couldn't learn something from him. -------------------- The sun, with all those planets revolving around it and dependent on it, can still ripen a bunch of grapes as if it had nothing else in the universe to do. -------------------- You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him discover it in himself. -------------------- They know that it is human nature to take up causes whereby a man may oppress his neighbor, no matter how unjustly... Hence they have had no trouble in finding men who would preach the damnability and heresy of the new doctrine from the very pulpit. -------------------- If I were again beginning my studies, I would follow the advice of Plato and start with mathematics. -------------------- I think that in the discussion of natural problems we ought to begin not with the Scriptures, but with experiments, and demonstrations. -------------------- Doubt is the father of invention. -------------------- It is surely harmful to souls to make it a heresy to believe what is proved. -------------------- All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them. |

A friend in power is a friend lost. -------------------- A teacher affects eternity he can never tell, where his influence stops. -------------------- Absolute liberty is absence of restraint; responsibility is restraint; therefore, the ideally free individual is responsible to himself. -------------------- Accident counts for as much in companionship as in marriage. -------------------- American society is a sort of flat, fresh-water pond which absorbs silently, without reaction, anything which is thrown into it. -------------------- As for America, it is the ideal fruit of all your youthful hopes and reforms. Everybody is fairly decent, respectable, domestic, bourgeois, middle-class, and tiresome. There is absolutely nothing to revile except that it's a bore. -------------------- Chaos often breeds life, when order breeds habit. -------------------- Everyone carries his own inch rule of taste, and amuse himself by applying it, triumphantly, wherever he travels. -------------------- Friends are born, not made. -------------------- He too serves a certain purpose who only stands and cheers. -------------------- In plain words, Chaos was the law of nature Order was the dream of man. -------------------- It is always good men who do the most harm in the world -------------------- It is impossible to underrate human intelligence - beginning with one's own. -------------------- Morality is a private and costly luxury. |

As athletes, we're used to reacting quickly. Here, it's 'come, stop, come, stop.' There's a lot of downtime. That's the toughest part of the day. -------------------- Even when I'm old and grey, I won't be able to play it, but I'll still love the game. -------------------- I can accept failure, but I can't accept not trying. -------------------- I never looked at the consequences of missing a big shot... when you think about the consequences you always think of a negative result. -------------------- I never thought a role model should be negative. -------------------- I play to win, whether during practice or a real game. And I will not let anything get in the way of me and my competitive enthusiasm to win. -------------------- I realize that I'm black, but I like to be viewed as a person, and this is everybody's wish. -------------------- I've always believed that if you put in the work, the results will come. I don't do things half-heartedly. Because I know if I do, then I can expect half-hearted results. -------------------- I've failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed. -------------------- I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed. -------------------- If you accept the expectations of others, especially negative ones, then you never will change the outcome. -------------------- If you're trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. I've had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it. |
