| Dogs, Cats and Other People - Mothers and Dogs | | By Matthew "'Uncle Matty" Margolis
Mothers have this wonderful ability to love their children unconditionally. They teach us what love is. One of those special events that impact us most in our childhood is the introduction of pets into our lives. Moms teach us that pets are a responsibility and that we need to be kind to animals.
It's a wonderful life lesson, and our childhood pet memories stay with us forever.
Moms not only care for us, but they also nurture our pets. They see that they have food and shelter. They give our pets love and affection, and teach us to do that, as well. They take our four-legged friends to the veterinarian. And when everyone else in the family is too busy to walk the dog or clean out the kitty litter pan, it's mom to the rescue -- always.
Pets depend on us, and thank goodness moms have the wonderful ability to live up to the responsibility that exists, regardless of the species they choose. I'm thinking about a mom I spoke with recently who wanted to bring a dog into the family. She recognized that her knowledge about dogs was limited and decided that she should do a little research ahead of time to make sure getting a pet was the right thing to do at the time. She started to bone-up on the subject by reading about puppies. She learned that they are like babies. They need their shots, health care, education and training, and lots of love and affection. A puppy needs a house that is puppy-proofed. They do not grow out of problems; they grow into them. She learned about temperament, testing to make certain the puppy was not aggressive and had a personality that would blend with the family. One of the big lessons for her was gaining the knowledge that aggression is not protection.
Next, she thought she should consider adopting an older dog. She discovered that there are advantages and disadvantages to pet adoption. You need to know how to avoid taking on other people's problems, or at least know what they are and be willing to deal with them. One thing led to another, and this mom's education continued by learning about different breeds and characteristics.
Some breeds are herders. Some are more prone to be high-energy, while others are more sedate, although temperaments vary within a breed, as well. Some breeds need a lot of exercise. Others benefit from a suitable, daily walk.
Then came the budgeting. What will a dog cost in terms of health care, training, food, toys, and accessories -- all the things necessary to live up to the responsibilities of owning a dog.
Finally, this mom told me she was prepared to get a pet, and that she was willing to accept the responsibility because she knew what to expect. Her children will benefit from this preparation, as well, because they are part of the plan. This will be one lucky dog -- healthy and happy -- and the children in this home will not be in harm's way because of the dog. They will learn about love and responsibility, and enjoy the wonderful memories of their pet for the rest of their lives.
Note: The Old Navy chain of retail stores is looking for a new spokesdog to replace its much-loved mascot mutt, "Magic." If your dog is well-behaved, and has charisma and confidence, you may submit your dog's bio and photo through May 29, 2006, at: www.oldnavy.com/magic -- where you will also find all the rules and regulations. There are also casting calls at North Avenue Beach in Chicago on Saturday, May 20, and in Union Square, New York City on Thursday, May 25. Look for the Old Navy casting bus.
Woof!
