Damn...you guys make it impossible to ask a question without the whole world (Ok somewhat of an exaggeration but a hell of a lot of people anyway) finding out your a dumbass. While I might advertize myself as Ignorant, I'd prefer people thought of me as Dangerously. So much for that!

Anyway....I was curious...on a post I saw something about Rep points? Commenters were passing them on to other commenters and such. I also noticed I had some..but I have no clue as to what they are, how you get them and what good they do you. So.....what's up with rep points?

Sure people laugh at the old ignorant guy...one of these days you'll be there too!

MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You even make it show up under new posts????? I might have gained rep points (?) But my testosterone level just dropped more than I'd care to lose.

Rep points are given by clicking the "Add to Reputation" icon against a comment:

There are restrictions on how many you may give out in a 24 hour period, and once you have given rep points to another member you have to wait a number of days before you can give them again.

Thanks Bamber for this info...but I still don't know what they are or what good they do you and if you got them why would you give them away? Generally my Reputation sucks, so who would want my sucky reputation points? Just asking...

Thanks again Bamber! That post really didn't clear anything up for me but atleast I know others are just as curious and unclear about rep points, what they are and why as I am. I am not ALONE!

Rep points were designed as a way to let another member know when you really really liked something they posted (positive or green rep or what we call a green m&m) or that you really really didn't like something they posted (negative or red rep or red m&m), the intent was to give them FOR postings, this is why the REP POINT button can be found on every post, they were originally anonymous, this led to abuse, and accusations when someone got a red as well as people giving them and signing someone else's name, I think, if I'm not mistaken, that they are auto signed now? meaning you can see who gave it to you? they serve no real purpose other than a way for members to pat one another on the back

Dangerously, the rep points/power serves no purpose lol. It's just another way to show respect to users for their posts. There is no way of hiding it unless it's hidden for everyone else, and i'm sure tons of people like this.

As for giving people rep, it doesn't take away from your rep points... it just keeps going up at a controlled rate

And we don't think you're stupid... a lot of people have no idea what that is

it took me nearly 2 years to find out we even had a rep point system lol unfortunately, I found out by bein' accused of giving a red one and signing someone else's name to it lol

my saving grace was that I had NEVER given out a single rep, red or green! lol
