There are several places along the path beside Queen's Marsh where trees have fallen in the past and had to be cut back to clear the way. The strangely dry segment of the rain soaked cut trunk of this one caught my eye.

Remember the "reclining lady" chestnut tree in Dartington Hall Gardens? It also has a hole right through it at just above head height.

The west side of all four chestnuts have fantastic shapes, but as I was there early in the morning could not get decent pictures as I would have been photographing into the sun. I'll try again on a duller morning or in the afternoon.

At the top of the flight of steps down to the tiltyard this red admiral butterfly flew towards me and fluttered around my knees before moving off to this bush where it posed so prettily for me.

With the rising sun behind me and the grey cloud yet to roll in from the west the tiltyard showed up at its best.

I was sure I'd fitted the whole sculpture in the frame but somehow I've cut the tips off the ears of Willi Soukop's bronze donkey.

The ears have been polished by the hands of children for the past 80 years touching them for luck.

Next to the nearby summer house there was a host of birds on the lawn beneath the trees.

Most were finches like these but as I sat for 10 minutes or so I also saw a nuthatch and a tree creeper. A lesser spotted woodpecker visited a branch only a couple of meters from me and we exchanged glances before it flew off to tap on a tree near the play house.

Part of the courtyard to Dartington Hall is shaded by an interloper from the USA: a swamp cypress.

This view is pure Devon. I can recognise my adopted county at a glance when I see views like this in pictures taken by others.

I think I'm getting the hang of my camera(s) now. I've got an idea for a simple harness for keeping my hands steadier when using the camcorder too.

On Saturday morning I took another walk to Dartington Hall. It was quite chilly, but clear and bright. Once again there was a heron on what I suspect is a favourite morning perch beside the weir.

It was cold enough for "white ladies" to be dancing above the river and a mist to be pulled from the surface of the Queen's Marsh ponds.

This lone fir tree leans towards the south, with the lowest branches that side actually trailing on the ground. Whenever I see it the phrase "rest your weary limbs" comes to mind.
