Actually, I couldn't give a tinker's dam for the blasted OS, and I have a degree in IT. It is Operating Systems like this that I got out of IT.

First the bastard locked down the windows partition on the main laptop, and could not use it for work because the IT dept is linux-phobics.
Went out and got a HP Stream 11 - good for web browsing and got onto the network, but no storage(thanks to the cloud centric fools who lord over IT like it is the EDO dynasty). My home Desktop had 8.1 Pro, dual booted with mint - everything was running good -old laptop had three linux systems, so I was still using that. Then I wound up with a Surface Pro on top of the others (and the old Macbook - I forgot about that one). All the Windows systems in the span of two days, whether I wanted the crap or not, forcibly upgraded to Windows 10; the only one without any problem in this Upgrade Armageddon was the Surface.
My Desktop, with all the work I put into school, plus various pics and tubes and Photoshop - nothing could be saved. I had to wipe the entire drive and reinstall without my back ups, because it won't recognize the drive. It also drops my mouse and Keyboard sporadically, which makes me have to unplug and replug the damed things.... The Hp was mostly painless but had to put in a USB to finish the upgrade, then get a SD card to boost storage. Laptop, I had to reinstall Windows, but hey, it is working somewhat. Would I recommend this BSOS to anyone? Not if the hardware didn't come with it.

Free isn't worth the money you'll pay for it.

Is there a way to do factory reset on a Windows 10 HP laptop that will not allow me to do a recovery disc, backup, or reset of any kind?

OK, thanks. This thing I have does not permit Windows Store, or any of the crap I need from the Store to make the computer run correctly, so I will need to do a full restore, and see if I can get the Windows Store installed somehow.

Aaannd that, ladies and gentlemen, is why I refuse to be a support person for PCs, laptops or notebooks. Everyone's machine and software is different, so it is practically impossible to cater for anyone's problem remotely.

I just resorted to using my Windows 8 laptop again. This time, automatic updates have been disabled. I should (now) be able to use software I like, instead of having to pay hundreds for new software less functional than what I am used to.

It will but it sometimes goes missing, did that on mine but it can be restored, you must have a Microsoft account to do it though.

I do have one. However, there seems to be no way of repairing the Windows 10 lappy without paying a tech to do it. It's basically a $300 message checker right now.

Well, it seems we will not have a choice. It is either take it or no support for whatever you have. R.I.P good old Windows 7.

With Windows 10, it is "Goodbye, quality tech"

Gawd! I'm going to betray myself, but I remember Word Perfect! My husband used to instruct at the Tech Institute. I typed all of his technical notes and exams. Full page matrix equations. If there was a problem, I could talk to a real person to get the solution (once had the entire team working on one, at the end, they asked me if I was working on a NASA project)!

I also used to do translations from English to French. Accents weren't an issue. Try getting answers from Micro-Soft Brains????

I remember writing software manuals in Word Perfect. Probably couldn't write a shopping list in it now.

I remember WordPerfect as well. I didn't use it a lot, because most of my work was writing code, where formatting was not required but complex search and replace were, so other editors were far better. Wordperfect was almost impossible to use without the cardboard ruler to locate the various options - there didn't appear to be much logic to the layout. Those were the days when the quality of the documentation was measured by weight - the manuals were ENORMOUS!

The consensus seems to be that I need a new app to open Windows Store, but cannot get it since I cannot open Windows Store with Windows 10... and that is from Microshaft.

Mr. G.G converted to W-10 today. Not good. I'm due next weekend. It better be good. Got the Jeep fueled up, not far away from Washington. There will be hell to pay if that doesn't go well.

Why do you have to convert?

I'm sticking with 7 for the foreseeable future. I'm still using XP for several things, where that ancient machine is still working fine, and I have programs that still work fine, that I will have to obtain new versions of or worse switch to something completely different. I don't want to pay to replace things that work.
