I never had one either, maybe that's why I loved riding in my cousins go-cart so much LOL!!

i recall as a child being eternally jealous (frankly i think i still am) of kids who had such toys

Might be why i have a fancy trans am now lmao

Well how about this.

At the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed there's a competition for the kids. They draw a soapbox cart on Friday and a selection of the drawings are used to create soapboxes to race down the hill on Sunday. It's a timed race rather than a mass cart race.

In the early days the kids themselves raced, but it became too dangerous and was even banned for a time. Damned interfering adults!

I had one like this when I was a kid, my two brothers and I rode it all the time....usually at the same time. LOL
