this is such a cool and rare event...the atmosphere and temperature have to be just right for this to happen
the last time i heard of it happening was the night the Titanic sank...i am sure it has happened since..i just havent heard it

It's called a light pillar and is more common than you think. It is caused by light from the sun, moon or even artificial light from the ground interacting with horizontal concentrations of ice crystals in the atmosphere. This picture was taken on 16 October over Whitefish Bay in Michigan and was taken at night. The photographer believes the light source in this case was artificial but could not accurately pinpoint it.
