For holes in your sock?
Dang I hate to say this far be it from little ole'd me to say LMP is not right but those are more egg shaped for darning holes in socks I have watched my Grandmother do this all her life.

I'll say for grinding medicines into powers.

Oh hell ~ one I was sure I knew, been away from here all week ~ and our dear LMP I think has hit the nail on the head ~ I think they are referred to as 'wooden eggs' ~ my old mother had one very similar to one of them.

them things that have little beads in them and make a sound when shaken...mexicans and spanish people use them in their bands

Also called darning eggs. Something you don't see used much nowadays.
