Not sure about the north of England but the forest of dean and parts of Gloucestershire are reputed to play a game called "keep it in the family". Can´t see how these could be used for that. Spurs maybe?
Salt cellars? That's salt holders not sellers of salt, although salt sellers have to hold salt so they can sell it?
Or maybe they hold pepper - pepper cellars? but then would the sellers be called purveyors of pepper or pepper sellers?
