The ivy climbing this tree must have been long established before being cut off from its root considering the girth of it.

It did.

A bit of both, I think. During current conditions travelers are being given more leeway, with local authorities doing what they can to help, which is probably why they are in their current location.

I believe the right hand doorway is recycled from the 16th century Alms Houses which were demolished twice, both times to make way for new roads. The first demolition was careful enough to allow most of the material to be used to rebuild a short distance away but the second demolition was permanent.
